Designing your own aquaponics system is not a problem anymore. If you want to have an aquaponics system, you can utilize tubs, tank, or basins at home. But if you want your system to have a uniform in shape, you can find a lot of aquaponics design available, whether online or offline.

Aquaponics design is not the emphasis in aquaponics system but the balance of the three essential factors of the system: plants, fish and the bacteria. If these three work together in harmony, the system will also function properly to maintain the balance.

What makes the aquaponics system balance?
You can observe the balance of your system if both plants and fish maintains its healthy condition. In aquaponics system, the process of growing fish in the fish tank can do a lot of things to the plants. Fish produces ammonia, algae, minerals and nitrates which need to be constantly filtered.

Everything that the fish produces are all natural and organic that can be beneficial for the plants to grow. In the same way, the plants give off oxygen and organic food supply from their waste to the fish. the ammonia alone, for example, gives rich amounts of nutrients for plants to grow optimally. In return, the plants will filter all those wastes from the fish tank to supply the fish with clean water flowing back to the tank.

Plants do their part in keeping the balance between the fish and bacteria in the system and allow the plants to grow and thrive healthier. However, if one of the three parts fails to function, the system will not work correctly and may result to damages to both plants and fish. Therefore to avoid this condition, you have to make sure that the design allows you to do constant monitoring.

Here are the 2 (two) basic and most commonly used aquaponics designs that needs minimal observations.

1. Continues Flow. One of the best aquaponics designs that works with continuous flowing of water in the system. Water is pumped from the fish tank to the area of growing plants above. It flows systematically throughout plant bed media down to its roots then continues down to the fish tank. The drawback of this design is that the right amount of nutrients can’t get to the plants adequately because the water is always flowing. It can only absorb fewer nutrients compared to those that don’t flow continually.

2. The Pump in Sump tank –constant height in fish tank design.
This type of aquaponics design has advantages in regulating the flow of water to the tank without using any pump in the fish tank. The pump is only used in the sump tank where water is pumped to the fish tank and the extra tubing is used to regulate the amount of water in the tank. The water flows to the grow beds and back into the sump tank.

These two designs are among the best do-it-yourself aquaponics design which can be applicable in both commercial or backyard type of aquaponics system. It’s always a matter of personal preference. The most essential aspect of aquaponics design is following the correct guidelines and information in making them. This is to ensure that you are in the right track of do-it-yourself aquaponics system.
